Day 7: Hungry & Thirsty for Righteousness (Waking Up Thirsty Series)

By Shirley Rosemarie Evans

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Are there any satisfied people out there?

The dictionary definition of satisfied is “contented” or well pleased”. The kind of feeling you get when you have indulged in a tasty meal where the service was first class and the food was delicious, the freshest of ingredients prepared with care.  You leave the table with a comfortable full stomach and your tastebuds still dancing.  This is what God promises to those who hunger and thirst for Him.

We live in a world where few are satisfied, we have a lifelong pursuit of the next best thing, be it the latest mobile phone, the next game console or the games themselves the world promises us with every new update a new improved model.  We are not satisfied with our looks and so the cosmetic industry makes billions as we pour our hard-earned cash, or max out yet another credit card for expensive surgeries to give us the perfect chin, nose, jawline, breast size, butt cheeks, lips, you name it we will cut it, plump it or downsize it.  Then there are the beauty creams that promise eternal youth, anti-ageing, cellulite removal you name it and I promise you the cream is out there.

So in a world that is never satisfied we have a God who says that if we hunger and thirst for Him, He can satisfy.  Sounds like a no-brainer yet He is largely rejected, dismissed, overlooked, ridiculed or ignored.  But I am so glad that we serve a God who can be trusted: He says what He means and He means what He says.  He satisfies those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.  To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to desire, above all else, a right relationship with God and with other people.

Man’s deepest longing if we but know it, is to be in a relationship with our creator. Only in Him does life truly have meaning and we can answer that age-long question of “why am I here.” In Christ, we find the answer and in Him we discover purpose. In Him are all desires met and in Him we are truly satisfied.  May we continually wake up thirsty reaffirming His plan that we were created to bring Him glory and as we rest in His good plan and live out His purpose may we live each and every day satisfied.

Ask: Why is so much time on this planet given to changing our looks, etc?

Seek: Are you fully satisfied with God?

Knock: Thank God for the gift of salvation and for awakening in you a hunger and thirst for righteousness.
