Day 10: Spiritual Hydration (Waking Up Thirsty Series)

By Shirley Rosemarie Evans

Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.

Revelation 21:6 NASB

The human body is about 60 per cent water.  Scientists tell us that staying properly hydrated is one of the most important things we can do for our bodies.  Water is needed for optimal brain function, good skin, healthy joints and muscles and to regulate body temperature.  Dehydration leads to fatigue, headaches, dry skin, irritability, low blood pressure etc. The point is we cannot live without water, in fact we can only live for three days without it. The recommended daily amount of water we are told we need is about 3 litres per day.

In the same way, we cannot live without tapping into Christ, He is the spring of the water of life. In whom we live, move and have our being. God is the source of all life and all of humanity is utterly helpless and hopeless without Him.  We who by faith have come to Christ have owned our complete bankruptcy and total dependence on Him. Anyone who believes in Him receives His life, it is a free gift given to all who will believe.

In Him, we find:

  • The greatest expression of love, joy and peace.
  • Strength to face all of life’s challenges,
  • We can operate from a place of wisdom
  • We can live lives that bring glory to God.
  • We find our purpose
  • We are created anew to the best versions of ourselves displaying who He is to a desperate world.
  • Power to overcome the enemy’s strategy

If we detach from the source like a car without the battery there is no power, it’s still a car but lifeless. Cultivating the practice of His presence keeps the battery charged and ensures optimum performance.

He promises to give the water of life freely to all who thirst.  May we, each and every day, wake up thirsty. It is His will for us to drink freely of His water continuously always. It is as we spend time in His presence, in His word, in worship and in fellowship with other believers that we keep ourselves spiritually hydrated.

But the good news does not end there spiritual hydration ensures that we not only live our best lives in the here and now but it is our ticket to spending eternity in the paradise Jesus promises.  We will be overcomers in this life, so it’s not that we won’t experience troubles, in fact, trouble is guaranteed not only because that is the nature of this fallen world but also because as believers as Jesus says “the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.” We do not fit, we live in the world but we are not of the world, we operate counter to the culture, and we oppose the kingdom of darkness.  But the best news is we know how this ends.  The eternal kingdom of God will be ushered in and we who have lived spiritually hydrated lives will live forever with Him there.

Ask: What are the dangers of spiritual dehydration?

Seek: How does the promise from the Alpha & Omega “I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.” motivate you to remain spiritually hydrated?

Knock: What steps will you take to wake up thirsty – that is to cultivate the practice of His presence?
