“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”
John 14:1-4 NLT
Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
Rev 19:11-16 NLT
The King is Coming!
We can place full confidence in the faithfulness of the word of God.
The King is Coming!
I can recall the Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II. Every school and neighbourhood were busy making preparations. Decorations were made, songs were learnt, memorabilia ordered, and tea parties organised. The day came that she would drive by – we stood and waved flags and shouted and cheered for all of 2 minutes and then … she was gone.
Our King came for the first time over 2000 years ago, He came not to wave from a distance as He passed by in an armour-driven motorcade, but He came to dwell among us, to show us the route to the kingdom. This is why He told His disciples “You know the way to where I am going.” He is our example, He has given us the written word, He has given us His Holy Spirit and the road map is clear. We know the way:
- Live in the Light of His First Coming. During His time here on earth, Jesus taught consistently about the kingdom present, we live life considering these teachings – loving God and loving people.
- Be Discerning. He has given us His Holy Spirit to discern. C. H. Spurgeon said, discernment is knowing the difference between right and wrong and right and almost right. Just because it’s the latest thing or it appears good does not mean it is God’s will or that it is good for us.
- Remember the Charge. Go make disciples of every nation: Be intentional about spreading the good news of the King and His Kingdom with all, not only in what we say but in the way we live.
- Keep Hope Alive. It’s so easy to lose heart when we wait so long for things to change or for them to happen in a way that reflects who Christ says we are, and sometimes it may seem that things are more challenging daily. Jesus told us that in the world we would have trouble, but He didn’t leave it there, He concludes, “But take heart I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) We too will be overcomers as we rest in Him.
- Encourage One Another. This pathway is not a one-man journey. He has called us into the biggest family on earth – the family of God. We are called to encourage, build, and strengthen one another all the more as we see the day approaching (Hebrews 10:25).
- Be Watchful. Jesus said that no one knows the day nor the hour of His return, but He tells us to be watchful and stay vigilant so that we don’t fall into the traps of the enemy or become complacent. Rather we remain in His word, having a consistent prayer life, so that the day does not take us unprepared.
- Remain Mission Focused. Teaching, giving, sharing, fellowshipping, and living in constant preparation for the King’s return.
On His return, His children will be shouting and praising God as we experience all our hopes fulfilled in an eternity with Him. For those who rejected Him, there will be no hiding place from the wrath of God. No one is forced to spend eternity with God the choice is ours to make, but let the record state: Our King is Coming!
Ask: Why would Jesus tell the disciples that they knew the way to the kingdom which was not yet visible?
Seek: Are you convinced that The King is coming? How does your conviction reflect in your daily living?
Knock: Make a list of three changes you will make to your walk reflecting your renewed conviction that the king is coming.
