Day 30: Garments of Distinction

Day 30: Garments of Distinction

By Cynthia J. Bourne

And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.

And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.

Garments of distinction.  Clothes that set you apart and mark you out for the given task.  A policeman in his blues tells you he is dressed and ready to ensure that the laws of the land are kept.  A soldier in his battle fatigues tells you he’s ready to protect Queen and country.

In Exodus 28 we hear the Lord giving instructions for holy garments, garments for glory and for beauty, garments befitting the office of a priest.  All the items of his garments were to represent specific duties and responsibilities and without such he was not ready for the office he was called to serve.

We have also been called to office.  The Word in 1 Peter 2:9 tells us that we too are “. . . . a royal priesthood . . .” As such we should have on our spiritual garment of office.

We are to be found wearing our breastplate of sound judgement, so that we demonstrate equity, our ephod showing heavenly beauty demonstrating we serve no other God , our blue robe of atonement guarding against evil speech and our mitre demonstrating our willingness to have our mind filled with God’s truth and the girdle as constant reminder that we are holy unto the Lord.

You, child God, have been called by the Captain of the Host of Heaven, to high office – the Royal Priesthood.  You have been given Garments of Distinction.  Walk in your garments, wear them with holy pride.  Let the world know who you are!

Ask – Think about the words – glorybeauty and wisdom.  Why were these significant to the priestly garments?

Seek – Read Exodus 28 again and reflect on your attitude to the spiritual office you have been called to.

Knock – Holy God, my heart is overwhelmed to think that You would call me into Your Royal Priesthood.  This is such a blessing.  I lean on you Lord and ask ‘Lord don’t let me fail.’  Uphold me with your right arm of righteousness, that your glory and beauty will be seen in me. Amen.
